how I feel about them
…MIXED FEELINGS. On the one hand, Giotto is clearly a nice guy who had good intentions, at least at the start. But then the Inheritance Arc happened and THAT was just. Messy. :/
The thing is, his decision to just step aside and let Daemon Spade do his thing and corrupt the Vongola family and undo all his hard work is baffling and extremely frustrating to me. He basically just gave up. There’s a reason he’s not the main character in this story, and this is it—if it had been Tsuna in his place, none of that would have ever happened. He would have never gone along with Cozart’s reasoning of “oh if we try to take down Daemon Spade it will involve a lot of sacrifice so you know what, it’s just better for us to sit this one out and hope our descendants will eventually take care of it.” Oh my God.
What really bugs me about it is the fact that everyone in the series puts Giotto on a pedestal despite all of this. It’s another one of those Iemitsu-ish things, where the characters see the world’s worst dad abusing his son and nod in approval because deep down Iemitsu clearly cares about his son and wants the best for him! THIS IS JUST HIS WAY OF SHOWING AFFECTION. With Giotto, they see this guy and his buddy Cozart conspiring to let an evil man ruin the lives of countless other people including their direct descendants, and they just shrug it off because hey, it all worked out in the end somehow. Sure, Enma’s family died and Tsuna got all his bones broken and other people were impaled and came this close to being paralyzed but GIOTTO HAD GOOD INTENTIONS, HE’S SUCH A GREAT GUY, FUCK.
Sometimes I’m just tempted to pretend the whole thing never happened. XD
favourite scene
The flashback where he meets Cozart for the first time and they bond over the fact that they were both trying to stealthily leave money for Paolo, and start chuckling about what fine human beings they are, and they shake hands and it is so, so gay.
otp for them (romantic or otherwise)
It’s an OT3—him, Cozart, and G. And it is without a doubt the sexiest pairing in KHR, despite it leading to the suffering of countless people as whined about in the paragraphs above. I DID SAY MY FEELINGS WERE MIXED. Conflicted! Because on the one hand they are terrible, but on the other hand, so very, very sexy.
G makes it better, I think. Adding him to the mix hopefully brings an element of sanity to this pair of well-meaning Jesuses. Like, okay, tone it down you two. Really.
my endgame of choice
Well he already had one, didn’t he? Poor fellow is very much dead. All he does nowadays is pop up on occasion to cheer Tsuna on and encourage him in any and all wiping-out-the-Vongola endeavors he chooses to pursue. That is one thing I still do like about Giotto—that he was cool with Tsuna just being like, “FUCK IT” to history of the Vongola. Possibly because it was similar to the way Giotto went and said “FUCK IT” to the future of the Vongola. …Okay, it’s coming off like I really do hate him, lol. Sorry about that. Ahh… I lost track of where I was going, so I’ll just say that I hope Tsuna makes him proud by following his own path.
my response to fandom’s attitude towards them
Fandom focuses on his sexy too much and forgets that he was also kind of a dick! It’s understandable I guess, since a lot of the fandom either didn’t read or didn’t pay much attention to/lost interest in the Inheritance Arc, especially toward the end (which is probably justified). But I’d like to see more acknowledgement of that fact. And also more fic about him and G and Cozart—the only good one I’ve come across is metisket’s The Balance of Devotion (which is excellent, but that just means it leaves me craving more :P).
