KHR 390: You Should Catch Up With KHR

omg he did pass out. 8D Hey does anyone else think Tsuna asleep with the mittens on is just the cutest thing ever. Like. WHAT IF HE GETS AN ITCH AND HE TRIES TO SCRATCH IT IN HIS SLEEP BUT IT’S NOT WORKING?! AND HE DOESN’T KNOW WHY SO HE STARTS MAKING LITTLE POUTY SLEEPING FACES. This is only one of many adorable things that could potentially happen while Tsuna is asleep wearing mittens.

“Yeah, I was just going to keep sitting here staring at you while you slept.” I was going to make some more remarks about this, but it’s basically the exact same thing I was doing myself a moment earlier, so. Uh.

Tsuna you have got to stop having kneejerk reactions of ill-advised chivalry, it just really doesn’t apply where you think it applies. Do you remember the last time you didn’t want to get someone involved? When that someone was Chrome? What happened, again? Oh, she got involved anyway and saved your ass? Now that you mention it, she did do that, didn’t she. …Come to think, do you recall also that the last time Kyoko’s name was brought up in this series it was in the context of her being the one WHO SAVED CHROME and brought her to the hospital? So in a way she indirectly saved you too! Give the little miss some credit here is all I’m saying.

Speak of the devil! If it isn’t self-actualized Chrome Dokuro herself, presumably on her way to attend a Seven Habits of Highly Effective People meeting (that’s a thing self-actualized people do, right?) with Gokudera. GO TEAM CHARACTER DEVELOPMENT.

I actually got several messages last week pointing out that the MYSTERIOUS HOUSE in the previous chapter looked a lot like Hibari’s house from one of the art books, and Hibari was also conspicuously absent from the MONTAGE OF VILLAINS-TURNED-BOYFRIENDS in the previous chapter. But maybe now everyone will face facts and just accept that Talbot actually lives in Hibari’s house. They’re actually related! No, just kidding, that would be silly. BUT ON THE OTHER HAND! Oh my god I need to shut up before I accidentally convince myself to believe a theory I literally just made up as a lame joke two seconds ago.

but seriously when I first read this all I could do was “!!!!!!” and it’s still the only thing. Because oh my god. “COME HERE AND SIT ON MY SHOULDER RIGHT NOW YOUNG MAN.” 8|

Singling this panel out because it’s the only panel in this entire speech that I can make fun of. Because close-ups of Reborn’s eyes… really. Don’t work. Teehee.

But now I’ll just shut up and let the man talk.

I’M SO SORRY FOR THE IMAGE SPAM oh my god I just didn’t know where/how to break it up at all because IT’S PERFECT.

Okay. Okay, so. How do I comment… what are words. ;_;

When I read stuff I read it in the characters’ voices. And when I read this speech, Tsuna’s “voice” was breaking by the end of it. So then I got choked up, and it’s ALL AMANO’S FAULT, but I’m not complaining or anything because have I mentioned, this was PERFECT?

This is everything I want from KHR. This is exactly, exactly the combination of emotions that makes me asdflkjslkjlg. Desperation and determination fused into one. Tsuna struggling to explain to Reborn how he feels, trying to explain his gratitude to Reborn and having trouble finding the words. (IT’S OKAY TO SAY “I LOVE YOU” IN A SHOUNEN MANGA, TSUNA. ITACHI DID IT JUST THIS WEEK SO IT’S OFFICIALLY SOCIALLY ACCEPTABLE.) His outrage that Reborn would give up so easily. More than outrage, pain, because Reborn was just kind of suffering quietly and having this grim fucking outlook the whole time he was teaching Tsuna to NEVER GIVE UP and to BOLDLY GO. Anger at the hypocrisy of it, but mostly anger because as he said, someone he loved was in that much pain all this time and he never knew about it.

And then the way he turns that anger and despair into resolve. “This time, I’ll teach you. Reborn… I’m not gonna let you die.”

That last sentence is why I’m reading this series. I… really can’t sum it up better than that. Why I read shounen, why I read or watch anything. There are so many emotions tied to that one sentiment that I can hardly begin to describe it. It’s not just resolve, it’s Tsuna stepping up to protect someone who up until now has always been the one supporting him. It’s a love thing, it’s a coming-of-age thing, it’s an inner strength thing, it’s a saying ‘fuck you’ to the inevitable thing. It just really doesn’t get more powerful than that.

The last time I felt like this reading KHR was the fireworks scene, and basically, we were dealing with the same kind of themes then too. “I’m not gonna let you die.”

Goddamn.
